Foodie Friday: Sweet and spicy smashed sweet potato recipe

This could be eaten as a healthy snack or dessert. It tastes kind of like sweet potato pie to me. Yummy.

Sweet potatoes are so healthy. Read about their health benefits .

I started this recipe by steaming a large sweet potato until it was tender. If you have average sized sweet potatoes I would use 2 for this recipe. Don't forget to use organic produce.

I put the sweet potato in a bowl and just smashed it with a fork. Then I stirred in the following ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of honey (read health benefits of honey here)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon cumin
That's it. A simple, yummy snack that is good to eat hot or cold. Enjoy! :)

Until next time.... God bless!

Thoughtful Thursday: Cauliflower health benefits

http://www.flickr.com/photos/horiavarlan/4268969014/
I really like the taste of cauliflower. It's ok cooked, but I really prefer it raw. Raw in wraps, raw in salads, or just raw cauliflower by itself. The taste, to me, is yummy.

One of my first memories of cauliflower is of an experience that left me feeling quite different about it than the way I feel now. I was in elementary school and someone came to visit and talk with some of us school children. The person brought raw veggies and urged us to try them. I remember trying cauliflower and not liking it at all. Obviously my taste preferences have changed somewhat! :)

I hope you reading this blog like cauliflower as much as I do. Here are some health benefits of cauliflower that may urge you to give it another try if you don't (or keep eating it if you do!):

  • Detoxes the body
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Anti-cancer benefits
  • Is a source of fiber
  • Has antioxidants
  • Has omega 3 fatty acids, tryptophan, b vitamins, and more!

To read even more about cauliflower and to see its complete nutritional profile, visit  the cauliflower page at WHFoods.com.

Do you like cauliflower as much as I do? What is your favorite way to eat it? Let me know in the comments section below. :)

Until next time.... God bless!

Avocado health benefits

Avocados are a very nutritious food to add to your diet. Here are some reasons why you should eat them regularly:
  • They help you to lose weight and keep it off. There are lots and lots of nutrients in avocados such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins a, b, c, d, k, and e, and many many more. View the entire nutritional profile here. The fat content works to stabilize your blood sugar, which causes you to feel full longer.
  • They work to prevent and treat certain types of cancer. The special compositional make-up of avocados actually causes free radicals to attack cancer cells while leaving nearby healthy cells alone.
  • The high folate content in avocados makes them heart healthy. A study has confirmed that women who eat diets high in folate have fewer heart problems.
  • They lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol, probably due to the high content of oleic acid, a mono-saturated fat found also in olive oil and known to lower cholesterol.
  • They help to lower blood pressure, probably due to their high potassium content.
  • Eating avocados with other foods, such as adding them to a salad or salsa, helps your body to absorb more nutrients from other foods. You see, some nutrients are fat soluble, which means they are absorbed by the body better when eaten with something that contains fat. Avocado fat is a good fat to choose to eat along with other foods for this purpose. A study has confirmed that only a little is needed.

Do you need some ideas on ways to eat avocados? How about making some avocado chocolate pudding? I love to eat if for breakfast. I call it the breakfast of champions. lol Also, guacamole is a nice way to eat avocados. I prefer Wholly Guacamole. What is your favorite way to eat avocados? The benefits of Adzuki Beans

Share this post:

The Adzuki bean. The humble little pink wonder bean from the far east.  Sometimes called the weight loss bean. My husband and I first heard about this bean on a health show on T.V. The lady had an accent and called them aduki beans- with no k. So, I had my husband ask for aduki beans at Whole Foods. They took us to them, no problem and I have since found out that they are commonly mispronounced. Just a warning there! :o) Actually, you will sometimes find them spelled azuki or aduki.

So on to the health benefits...

  • Low in calories and sodium
  • High in magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and b vitamins
  • Contain protease inhibitors, which discourage the growth of cancerous cells
  • Rich in soluble fiber, which binds to toxins and cholesterol to eliminate them from the body
  • In Japan, adzuki beans are used to support kidney and bladder function

Anxious to try them? Cook up a pot of yummy adzuki vegetable soup today! :o)
